You can move while shooting and can interrupt your stream of bullets to dodge roll, which is generally your most effective way to avoid attacks unless you have solid cover nearby. Different gun types can be loaded with different types of bullets and may have more than one chamber to allow you to change between rounds. Your offensive guns can fire a limited number of bullets before they need to reload and have limited bullet capacities. Wizard with a Gun places you in an isometric world where your moves and shoots in real time. The game also has solid music and I spent way more time than necessary mousing over all the main menu options, which sounds like strumming a guitar in tune with the game’s main theme. The environments are colorful and featured varied monsters, from other gunslingers to strange animals to the bright and otherworldly beings of chaos. It quickly and effectively conveys the ruined world and the rugged hero you get to customize while also hinting at their nature as magicians rather than simple gunslingers. The game has a neat art style that’s evocative of the mage designs in Final Fantasy but in a rustic western setting. Thankfully, helpful map stations located in the wilderness can help you to get your bearings more quickly in the short amount of time you have to work with when exploring.īefore I move from the game’s structure to its combat and crafting mechanics, I want to take a moment to highlight the visual style and sound design. This prevents you from being able to return reliably to the same location in order to farm a particular resource and challenges you to explore anew with each run. Different objects and enemy locations are seeded around the map, and the gears for the time machine which serve as your primary goals during a given run are relocated. Legally distinct red mageĮach run changes the shape and substance of the world you have available to explore. It’s good if you want a short play session where you feel like you can make decent progress when you don’t have a lot of time to spare. While the timer will ultimately get longer than what we see in the demo, I imagine it won’t be expanding so much from five minutes that individual sessions out in the wilderness start to last like an hour or something. This is the typical roguelite structure condensed into a micro form five minutes or so of fighting and harvesting before a brief pop back into the tower to rewind, craft a couple of things, and then head out to do it all again. I mean minutes quite literally – in the beginning your journeys into the harsh wilderness will be on a five real-life minute timer until you collect the tools needed to upgrade your time machine and extend the timer. In the tower is a machine that rolls back time before the end of the world – each time you go back, you have a few minutes to explore and get new materials before you have to return back before being caught up in the end of the world yourself. The game has a roguelite structure where you explore the world outside of the tower in short runs. The wizard’s tower serves as a permanent base where you can plant furniture without worry of it moving around – but out in the dangerous world destroyed by chaos, no structure you build will last between visits. Guns, bullets, potions, and facilities or furniture can all be crafted, with the latter being placable in the environment with the help of your world building gun. Destroying things in the environment like trees or abandoned structures or furniture provides materials that you can then use to craft. Wizard with a Gun begins with a short tutorial in which you learn the basics of shooting and crafting. You do this by rebuilding a wizard’s tower complete with all the crafting stations and magical ephemera needed to shoot Cthulhu in the face. As seemingly the last remaining wizard, you must turn back the clock and undo the damage in an effort to restore the world to normal. Introduced during Devolver’s Summer Games Fest presentation with a lovely musical animatic, Wizard with a Gun tells the story of a world destroyed by the eldritch forces of chaos. Have you ever been redecorating your home and thought “this would be so much easier if I could just shoot everything?” This appears to be the gameplay premise of Devolver Digital’s Wizard with a Gun, a game about…well, about wizards with guns.
